COVID-19 Credentials for International Travel: Feasibility, Security, and Ethics
Aug. 3-5
This workshop will explore issues that need to be addressed to facilitate effective, feasible, ethical, and secure ways to document and provide COVID-related health information before international travel. Presentation topics will include the validity of vaccine passports; legal considerations of requiring vaccines that have not been approved by the traveler’s destination country or the World Health Organization; the standardization of acceptable vaccines between countries; and the security and privacy of health information.
Fully Supporting Nurse Well-Being to Advance Health Equity
Aug. 4
The health and well-being of nurses ultimately influences the quality of care they provide to patients. This third webinar in a series on the recent report The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity will explore ways to promote nurse well-being, and how nurse well-being connects to health equity. Panelists will analyze both individual and systems-level approaches to addressing the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of nurses.
Housing Insecurity Among People Living with Cancer

At this webinar, speakers will discuss topics such as strategies to screen for housing insecurity, promising programs, and potential policy opportunities to address housing insecurity across all stages of cancer care. The webinar is the second in a series focusing on some of the social needs that impact cancer care and patients’ quality of life.
Challenges and Opportunities for Precision and Personalized Nutrition
Aug. 10-12
Nutrition is more than what you eat — family medical history, the environment, and other factors can determine how your body will respond to certain foods. This workshop will explore the concepts of personalized and precision nutrition. Speakers will discuss policy and regulatory challenges, and examine what research is needed to determine if these fields have applications across populations and the potential to address major chronic diseases.
Transportation Asset Management
Aug. 10-12
This conference will cover a broad range of asset management topics to help transportation agencies manage their infrastructure assets to meet society’s needs today and in the future. Topics include infrastructure, funding, and programmatic resilience; risk management; and financial planning and asset valuation.
Diversifying the Nursing Workforce
Aug. 11
Nursing leaders have an important opportunity to diversify the nursing workforce, faculty, and student pipeline, so that nurses at all levels reflect the communities they serve. Panelists will explore how diversifying the nursing workforce is particularly vital to addressing the social factors that impact our health and quality of life. They will also discuss ways to cultivate a diverse workforce through education, preparedness, and leadership. This is the fourth and final webinar in a series on the recent report The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.
Changing the Manual to Support Deployment of Automated Vehicles
Aug. 18
This webinar will discuss proposed changes to Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices that may help in the deployment of automated vehicles (AVs). Presenters will also cover one of the most significant changes, which is a section dedicated to the support of AV deployment. Representatives of a state department of transportation and the auto industry will provide feedback.
Channeling the Potential of AI to Advance Health Equity

This webinar is a collaboration between the NAM’s Leadership Consortium Digital Health Action Collaborative and Culture Inclusion & Equity Action Collaborative, which in concert aim to advance a learning health system by enabling the effective and equitable integration of new technologies to meet the individual care needs of all people. Discussions will focus on key principles for the development, deployment, utilization, and maintenance of AI tools to realize their transformative potential in achieving equitable health for all populations and avoiding harm.
Reports Scheduled for Release in August
Release dates for the following consensus reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (e-mail news@nas.edu) and ask to be placed on a contact list.
The Use of Limited Access Privilege Programs in Mixed-Use Fisheries
This report will examine the use of Limited Access Privilege Programs in fisheries that are used both recreationally and commercially, and the programs’ social, economic, and ecological effects. The report will also look into any impacts on fishery stakeholders, and recommend policies to address negative impacts.
